We take inspiration from a deep historical partnership of science and the arts in Yellowstone. The will to establish Yellowstone National Park was catalyzed when the geologist Ferdinand Hayden brought photographer William Henry Jackson and painter Thomas Moran on an 1871 expedition into its deep wilderness, then reported back to our nation’s public. The images from their expedition conveyed Yellowstone’s great geological monuments far more powerfully than mere words. We aspire to bring our disciplines together again as we report on some of Yellowstone’s great ecological wonders.
